Welcome to the Board

Established under the Opticians Act 1956 Bord na Radharcmhastóirí, the Opticians Board is the registration and regulatory body for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. Functions include approval of the education and training of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, registration of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians and control of the practice of optics in accordance with the Board’s Rules which are approved by the Minister for Health. It is an offence for anyone other than a registered Optometrist (or registered medical practitioner) to prescribe spectacles. Registered Dispensing Opticians may dispense spectacles prescribed by registered Optometrists (or registered medical practitioners).

In 2008 a Government decision to subsume Bord na Radharcmhastóirí into the Health & Social Care Professionals Council (CORU), as part of a rationalization programme, was announced. The Health & Social Care Professionals Act 2005 provides for establishing the H&SCPC and registration boards for a number of stipulated professions whose members were not previously registered on a statutory basis. Legislation for integrating the Board into the H&SCPC, transferring the Board’s functions, establishing new registration board/s for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, and transferring the Board’s registers of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians is being prepared in the Department of Health.

The Opticians Act 1956 (as amended) will remain in force until it is revoked by statute when integration of the Board into CORU is complete.
