Bord Na Radharcmhastóirí – the Opticians Board
The Board is established under the Opticians
Acts 1956 and 2003. Board members sit for terms
of five years. The term of office of the present
board is from 1 January 2010 to 31 December
2014.
There are eleven board members. Five members
of the board are appointed by the Minister
for Health and Children. Four of these appointed
members are required to be registered medical
practitioners. The Minister also appoints the
President of the board.
Six board members are elected by registered
optometrists and registered dispensing opticians.
Five of the elected members are required to
be registered optometrists. One of the elected
members is required to be a registered dispensing
optician.
The Opticians Board is wholly funded by the
registration and retention fees paid by registered
opticians (optometrists and dispensing opticians). It
receives no funding from government or other
