Welcome to the Board
Established under the Opticians Acts, 1956
and 2003, the Board is the regulatory body
for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians.
It is an offence for anyone other than a registered
Optometrist (or registered medical practitioner)
to prescribe spectacles. Registered Dispensing
Opticians may dispense spectacles prescribed
by registered Optometrists (or registered medical
practitioners).
The functions of the Board include approval of the education and training of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, registration of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians and control of the practice of optics, in accordance with rules made by the Board with the approval of the Minister for Health and Children.
